Map For Us

Live location, chat and SOS for the people you love, encrypted on your phone before anything leaves it. Our server only ever holds noise.

553
bytes in every event, SOS included
14
parts of one app
4
kinds of screen: phone, watch, car, browser
0
emails, phone numbers or passwords asked of you

How it keeps it yours

Same update. Two very different views.

Your circle reads a note, a place, a position. What reaches the server is sealed in the phone with a key the server never sees.

  1. We can’t see where you are

Positions, saved places, names, photos, messages and alert text are all ciphertext to us.

  2. Every event is the same size

Updates are padded to 553 bytes, so an SOS looks exactly like a routine check-in on the wire.

  3. No email, phone number or password

Your identity is a key made on your phone. A recovery code brings it back on a new one.

  4. No ads, trackers or analytics

Crash reports are off unless you send one, and you read the whole report first.

libsodium throughout: XChaCha20-Poly1305 for data, X25519 sealed boxes to hand each device the circle key, Ed25519 signatures, and an Argon2id-protected recovery code. The same encryption is written in TypeScript, Swift and Kotlin, and thousands of shared tests check that all three agree byte for byte.

Every feature

113 features, 14 groups

As mapforus.com describes them, shortened. Anything still in testing, or waiting on a store, says so beside its name.

Privacy and trust

Encrypted on the phone, and honest about the little the server does see.

  • End-to-end encryptionLocation, places, chat, photos and alerts are sealed with a key only your circle holds.
  • What we can seeA screen in the app lists, in plain words, what the server can and cannot learn about you.
  • Safety numbersCompare a short code with another member to confirm nobody is listening in.
  • Who holds the keySee every device that can read what you send to each circle, and export an access report.
  • Who can see meOne screen lists everyone, in every circle, who can see you, and how many speed alerts are set on you.
  • Precision dialChoose per circle how exactly you are seen, from your exact spot down to about 10 km.
  • See me exactlyPick the few people who always get your exact position, whatever the dial says.
  • Spoofing warningsMembers with self-reported positions or a phone clock that disagrees are flagged.
  • Hide in app switcherBlanks the app’s preview in your recent-apps view.
  • Consent-first crash reportsRead the whole report, with location and messages removed, before you choose to send it.

Live map

Where everyone is, how fresh it is, and how to reach them.

  • Live family mapPositions, freshness, battery and speed, with grouping when people are close together.
  • Follow and fit everyoneKeep the camera on one person as they move, or frame the whole circle in one tap.
  • Map layersStandard, satellite, traffic and 3D, in a light, dark or automatic style.
  • Refresh locationsOne tap asks every phone in the circle to send its position right now.
  • Ask whereAsk one person for their location. They choose to share once or say not now.
  • Stopped-answering warningWhen a phone goes quiet, the map says so instead of pretending it is up to date.
  • FindA compass needle and distance that point straight at a member.
  • Navigate to themOpen directions to any member in your maps app.
  • Travelling togetherTwo people in the same car show as one trip, not two dots on top of each other.
  • Member dayEvery stay and every trip in someone’s day, laid out as a timeline.
  • Activity feedThe last 24 hours of check-ins, arrivals, drives, battery and safety events, with reactions.

Places and errands

Home, school and work, known only to your circle.

  • Place automationsWhen you arrive or leave, check in, remind yourself, notify someone or start a walk. Runs only on your phone.

  • Parking spotSave where you parked, the level and bay, a meter countdown and the walk back.

Safety and SOS

For the moment you hope never comes, and the walk home before it.

  • SOSHold to start a countdown you can cancel. Your circle’s phones sound even in Do Not Disturb.
  • SOS from anywhereStart it from a home-screen shortcut, a widget, the iPhone Action Button, a Live Activity, your watch or your car.
  • Practise SOSA rehearsal that sends nothing, so the real one feels familiar.
  • Respond to an SOSTell them you have seen it, navigate to them, and hear when they are safe.
  • Check inOne tap to say you are fine, with an optional encrypted note.
  • Walk with mePick a destination and a time. If you stall, the app asks if you are OK, then raises an SOS.
  • Safety timerA countdown without a destination, started from the phone, watch or car.
  • Crash checkWhile you drive, a sudden stop gets a prompt. No answer in a minute sends an SOS.
  • Do Not DisturbEveryday alerts arrive quietly. SOS never does.

  • RelayLabsOn Android, carry a member’s sealed updates when they have no signal.
